Tom Merriman – Managing Partner
Tom Merriman graduated magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame with Phi Beta Kappa honors, then graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1988, earning an A+ in both Negotiation and Jurisprudence. He served as a teaching assistant to Professor Roger Fisher, the Harvard negotiation expert and author of "Getting to Yes," before completing a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Frank J. Battisti, then Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.
At 29 he was named managing attorney of the Ohio Attorney General's Cleveland office, overseeing more than 70 attorneys and staff. At 31 he was appointed Deputy Ohio Attorney General. He led Operation Windfall, a fugitive sting that secured 1,100 arrests and was profiled by the New York Times, and Operation Crackdown, which earned the Council of State Government Innovation Award in 1994. After 14 years of nationally honored investigative journalism, he returned to trial law in 2009 and founded Merriman Legal in 2019.

- Trucking Trial Lawyers Association Top 10, Ohio: Tom holds a Top 10 membership in the Trucking Trial Lawyers Association (TTLA), a peer-reviewed distinction limited to the top ten plaintiffs' attorneys in truck accident litigation in each state. Membership requires demonstrated trial results and peer recognition from fellow plaintiff attorneys.

- 38 Emmy Awards: Tom earned 37 Emmy Awards during his journalism career at WEWS-TV and WJW FOX 8, more than any other reporter in the Cleveland market during that period. He has since earned his 38th Emmy Award for his "Is It Legal?" segment on FOX 8 News, produced while simultaneously running a full-time personal injury practice.
- Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Silver Baton and IRE Medal: Tom's 25-part investigative series exposing fraud in the Cleveland Municipal School District's transportation department won both the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Silver Baton, which Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism describes as "the Pulitzer Prize of broadcast journalism," and the Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) Medal, the top national honor in investigative journalism. Both awards were earned for the same investigation.
- Harvard Program on Negotiation Master Class Certification: Tom completed the Harvard Negotiation Master Class, an invitation-only program offered jointly by Harvard Law School, Harvard Business School, and Harvard Kennedy School. The program includes intensive simulations and personalized feedback from Harvard faculty and builds on the foundational negotiation training Tom received as Roger Fisher's teaching assistant at Harvard Law.

In 2002, Tom led a hidden camera investigation in South Korea documenting U.S. military police protecting American soldiers at establishments where trafficked women were held captive. The series, "Trafficked for the Military," triggered a Department of Defense Inspector General investigation, Congressional hearings, and reform of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz issued a zero-tolerance memorandum on trafficking by military personnel in response. Katherine Chon, co-founder of the Polaris Project and now HHS Director of the Office on Trafficking in Persons, has publicly credited Tom's series as the inspiration for her career in anti-trafficking work.
Tom represented more than 290 clients in the University Hospitals fertility clinic tragedy, appearing on the Today Show with Megyn Kelly to discuss the case. His legal work and commentary have been covered by the New York Times, Washington Post, The Atlantic, Bloomberg Law, CBS News, Fox News, CNN Headline News, and Inside Edition.
On June 30, 2026, a Cuyahoga County judge entered a combined $10.1 million default judgment against the defendant in our firm's civil assault case arising from a violent attack on two Case Western Reserve University housekeeping workers. The judgment included punitive damages after the court found the defendant's conduct willful, wanton, and reckless. Tom represented both women.
In 2025, he led our firm's civil legal action following Miami University's 15-year suspension of a fraternity chapter for brutal hazing, matching the most severe penalty the university has ever imposed. He continues to serve as FOX 8 Cleveland's legal analyst on the "Is It Legal?" segment and appears regularly on New Day Cleveland's "Case or Not a Case?" commentary feature.
